Broadly speaking, the form of the Service of the Word is similar in both traditional and contemporary churches: Scripture reading, sermon, and response to the Word.

Scripture. Two or three Scriptures are usually read, often from the lectionary texts. When lectionary texts are not used, careful attention is given to the choice of texts throughout the year so that the people may hear a broad range of biblical material.
